12/7/2023 0 Comments Chinese rocket crash location mapCanada accepted and nothing more was pursued.” “Russia refused to give details, and offered just $3 million. “They exchanged diplomatic letters with Russia referring to the Liability Convention,” said Cassandra Steer, acting executive director of Center for Ethics and Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. The Union of Concerned Scientists lists 1,459 operating satellites, though another 11,600 float around Earth as space junk. They also sought $6 million in compensation from the Soviet Union. No one was injured, but given the potential for radioactive contamination, Canada felt compelled to launch a cleanup mission, Operation Morning Light. Such was the case in 1978, when a nuclear-powered Soviet satellite - Cosmos 954 - sprinkled debris over 370 miles of Canada’s Northwest territories. Only governments can make claims against another government. But under the treaty’s terms, you cannot personally seek compensation from China or any other nation. That means if Tiangong-1 did strike your property, your sole means of recourse would be the Space Liability Convention, an international treaty ratified in 1972 by the United Nations. “So they’re assigned to a country, not a company.” “The interesting thing about satellites is even though a large proportion are commercial, all satellites are considered national activities,” Grego said. Still, only one person in history - Lottie Williams of Tulsa, Oklahoma - has been hit on the ground by falling space debris. Those especially have a tendency to survive,” Langbroek said. ![]() “There are pressure spheres and fuel tanks on these kinds of space stations. One example is hydrazine, a highly toxic and corrosive substance used as spacecraft fuel. It’s unclear what hazardous materials might have been inside Tiangong-1, she said. “You shouldn’t go run over and smell it.” “You shouldn’t go run over and smell it, and you probably shouldn’t go pick it up,” said Laura Grego, a physicist and global security expert with the Union of Concerned Scientists. So, in the event that a remnant of Tiangong-1 lands in your backyard or destroys your car, here’s a guide to what you should do. And pieces of rocket engines possess a higher likelihood of survival.īased on Langbroek’s calculations and those made by the European Space Agency, Tiangong-1’s surviving parts are most likely to land in the ocean, but they could also hit anywhere across “the whole of Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the southern parts of Europe and Asia, South America and United States,” Langbroek said. While much of the space station will break apart and burn during re-entry, scientists at the European Space Agency expect between 20 to 40 percent - 1.5 to 4 tons - of Tiangong-1 to survive the fiery plummet because the space station is so big. “Only in the hours directly before the real re-entry can we narrow this window down to tens of minutes,” Dutch satellite tracker Marco Langbroek told the PBS NewsHour. (You can track the descent here and here). Map by Marco LangbroekĪs of March 30, scientists predict Tiangong-1 will make its final plunge on April Fool’s Day, but there is a 14-hour window of uncertainty. Cities with populations larger than 1 million people between the target latitudes are marked in red, and cities near a projected trajectory are marked in white. The lines on this map show where Tiangong-1 could come down. If the Tiangong-1 spreads these materials over thousands of miles, the risks of injury and environmental damage are still high. ![]() And the risk encompasses more than just being struck by space debris, due to the hazardous materials potentially inside the space station. While your chances of being hit by a piece of Tiangong-1 are tiny - 10 million times less than your chances of being hit by lightning this year - the risk will be impossible to calculate until its final descent begins. In low-Earth orbit, the air is still thick enough to create drag and bring down the wayward station. Though our atmosphere becomes thinner as you increase altitude, its upper limit is 6,200 miles above sea level. Since then, the school bus-sized station has tumbled through space, gradually slowing and falling out of orbit due to atmospheric drag. But in March 2016, Tiangong-1 unexpectedly stopped working, according to a letter filed to the United Nations. The last astronauts departed the 10-ton station in June 2013, and Chinese officials put the space station into sleep mode, expecting it would remain operational until they could facilitate a controlled re-entry. It launched in 2011 with a two-year mission. ![]() Though its name means “heavenly palace,” the space station, named Tiangong-1, lasted only five years before malfunctioning. A Chinese space station is tumbling uncontrollably toward Earth, and no one will know where its pieces will land until hours before it gets here. 12/7/2023 0 Comments Apple lightning cable manufacturerAnd I believe once you have the complete picture, you’ll see those perceived injustices are anything but. I wanted to shed some light on the history of the Lightning connector, Apple’s MFi program, their relationship with USB-C-and how the thread that runs through all of that has driven their product choices over the years. This has bothered me for quite some time, and so I began writing this blog post when the rumors around USB-C limitations on the iPhone 15 lineup first started to surface. Few know about the MFi Certification Program, and even fewer know about how it works. News articles opt for flashy headlines and often don’t delve deeper-and Apple, of course, remains silent about its product engineering choices and how the company operates internally. Comments like : “Apple just wants to sell Lightning cables!”, “Apple is always so far behind!”, or simply "Apple sucks!" are commonplace. Regardless of the truth behind Apple’s choices, it’s tradition at this point for people to target them for the perceived injustices towards their customers. This is definitely slow by today’s standards when it comes to Android phones, some of which support up to 150W, but more on that later.Īside from frustration about the potential limitations, speculation was abound about why Apple was only making the switch now-is it really because of the EU laws? Or is there something more to it? When it comes to power delivery, Apple specifies that the iPhone 15 models will still be limited to 20W fast charging, although theoretically it can go up to 30W. And because Apple uses previous-gen chips for their non-Pro models to reduce cost, it just wasn’t possible to support 10 Gbps on the base iPhone 15 model. And contrary to what you may read, this is pretty in line with industry standards, with only the Android phone supporting 10Gbps being the Asus ROG Phone II. We now know the data speed limit has a straightforward explanation: only the A17 Pro chip contains the sub-processor necessary to allow USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps. ![]() ![]() But as much excitement as there was about the change in the time leading up to the event, there were also complaints about rumored limitations Apple was going to implement on both charging and data transfer speeds. With Apple's Wonderlust event today, the iPhone 15 lineup (and AirPods Pro 2) have finally switched to USB-C. Law, who by then worked for Columbia Records, assembled a collection of Johnson's recordings titled King of the Delta Blues Singers that was released by Columbia in 1961. Musicologist Alan Lomax went to Mississippi in 1941 to record Johnson, also not knowing of his death. Brunswick Records, which owned the original recordings, was bought by Columbia Records, where Hammond was employed. In late 1938 John Hammond sought him out for a concert at Carnegie Hall, From Spirituals to Swing, only to discover that Johnson had died. His music had a small, but influential, following during his life and in the two decades after his death. The one most closely associated with him is that he sold his soul to the devil at a local crossroads to achieve musical success. Johnson's poorly documented life and death have given rise to much legend. Much of his story has been reconstructed by researchers. ![]() Other than these recordings, very little was known of him during his life outside of the small musical circuit in the Mississippi Delta where he spent most of his life. Most were released as 10-inch, 78 rpm singles from 1937–1938, with a few released after his death. These songs, recorded solo in improvised studios, were the totality of his recorded output. He participated in only two recording sessions, one in San Antonio in 1936, and one in Dallas in 1937, that produced 29 distinct songs (with 13 surviving alternate takes) recorded by famed Country Music Hall of Fame producer Don Law. Īs a traveling performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as being "the first ever rock star". Although his recording career spanned only seven months, he is recognized as a master of the blues, particularly the Delta blues style, and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His landmark recordings in 19 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. That's how big Mehldau's solo act of creativity and clarity was.Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) was an American blues musician and songwriter. He returned for one encore, a truthful reading of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed." It could have been Carnegie Hall or Town Hall was the general consensus overheard as the audience walked into the humid Ulster County night. Then on to the chiming pop of George Harrison's "If I Needed Someone." Taken here as a meditation, a preamble of sorts to Neil Young's haunted hippie paean from 1970, "Don't Let It Bring You Down." Locked into a greater essence, Mehldau, the muse, and the audience crossed paths with Radiohead's "IndentiKit." 12/6/2023 0 Comments Amazon backup camera![]() If your car doesn't have a rearview camera and you're looking for a less expensive alternative, it's hard to beat the eRapta ERT01. The Auto-Vox CS-2 is pricier than some other car backup camera systems, but the high performance and reliability ensure that customers will be satisfied with the purchase. However, for parallel and close-quarters parking, 110 degrees works well as it cuts down on the amount of image distortion created on the screen. It should be noted that the viewing angle for the CS-2 rearview backup camera is 110 degrees, which may be too narrow for drivers who want a very wide field of vision. Plus, the signal is strong, with Auto-Vox recommending the camera for any vehicle less than 32 feet long. The camera uses digital wireless transmission, which means that there's virtually no interference from other signals and no distortion to the image. While wired cameras are more reliable than wireless ones on the whole, the CS-2 - like the other wireless cameras we've included here - is an exception to that rule. That means you can save money by avoiding installation fees with this wireless backup camera. As it's a wireless camera, you should have no problem attaching the camera (with built-in wireless transmitter) to the back of your car or mounting the suction-cup-enabled screen on your dashboard. If you want easy installation and great picture quality, the Auto-Vox CS-2 offers the best of both worlds. All you need to do is attach the backup camera to the rear of your car (preferably as close to the center of the car as possible) and send the footage to a monitor attached to a console display, your dashboard or an inset screen on your rearview mirror, giving you better visibility with no straining to see your blind spots while going in reverse. There are plenty of aftermarket cameras designed for these older vehicles that you can install yourself. Many of us are still driving vehicles made before 2018, but don't fret if you're feeling left out.
